EXPERIMENT 1

5.1 Introduction

The chapter begins by presenting the aims and the research questions of Experiment 1. Then,
the methods and the results OfExperiment 1 are presented. The Results sections begins with
the baseline measures and each one of the post test measures and concludes with between and
across tests comparisons (for more details about the organisation of the results see the Results
section).

5.2 Aims and Research questions of Experiment 1

Experiment 1 was designed to investigate the effect of child based factors (phonological
working memory, vocabulary level and age) and the nature of the input for the acquisition
of new words. The main research questions of Experiment 1 (as already presented in the
previous chapter) are the following:

1. To what extent does children’s word learning differ by their age ?

2. To what extent does children’s word learning differ by the linguistic condition in which
the novel word is presented ?
