compositions influenced by her interest in and study of the American vernacular.
In addition to placing musical works in the context of Larsen’s career, and
discussing how the composer incorporates extramusical ideas in the pieces, this study
outlines the connections between four of her major works with viola: Black Roller, Cajun
Set, Black Birds, Red Hills, and Viola Sonata. Reference is also made to several other
instrumental works by Larsen.
