Land purchases, relative to total area, were concentrated in the 200-799 hectare and 2,000
plus hectare ranges with 40.0 percent and 35.4 percent of the area transferred respectively nationwide.
Of the total land area in the 200-799 hectare size category (142,582 hectares), 2.5 percent was
purchased and 3.4 percent was leased-in. Land markets appear to be particularly dynamic in the
Southern region, where a full 9.0 percent of the land base in this farm size category was purchased.
In the Copperbelt/Others region, 8.4 percent of the land base of 800-1,999 hectare farms was
purchased, despite the fact that the earlier analysis indicated that small farms were changing the most
in number. Moreover, as seen above, the area occupied by large farms over 2,000 hectares
experienced the greatest change, yet only 0.3 (0.1) percent of the land base of the largest farms was
reported purchased (sold), and another 1.0 (0.1) percent was reported as leased-in (leased-out). A very
high proportion (15.7 percent) of Lusaka's total land base was leased-in by farms in the 0-199 hectare
category. The 0-199 hectare farms in every province appear to be most active, usually with 3-6
percent of their area being transferred each year.
