Syzygy, as a term used in astronomy, refers to the conjunction or opposition of two
heavenly bodies. The Greek word from which it is derived means union or conjunction. In
poetry it was a combination of two feet, frequently of different kinds, implying a union of
opposites, or at least Ofdifferences. The term appealed to those of us at the Shepherd School
who are interested in new music because it suggested a number of facets of the current state
of the art which contribute to its vitality: Unityldiversity, Synthesisianalysisf
a great musical-φhilυsophical continuum, one aspect of the Harmony of the Universe.
SYZYGY, as a musical organization, is sponsored by the Shepherd SchoolofMusic, and
features performances by Shepherd School artist faculty and guests. It is devoted to the most
recent music of the twentieth century, in the belief that the great music of our time is being
created in our time.
