to thank my husband, Mr. Daniel Mwanzia for his understanding, time, and
support. He graciously assisted in some parts of the fieldwork in Kenya. As an
insider who understands first hand the culture and language (Kikamba and
Kiswahili), we were able to quickly reframe questions for clarity to secure a
wealth of quality testimonies and data. This journey was a family project and
family reunion engaging members in Kenya who took time out to remember
“what they used to do” and the “old ways”. I also want to thank my three children
Kanini, Amani, and Nadiya for their patience and understanding. I hope this and
future works will help them recall and remember their diverse heritages. Finally, I
want to thank my ancestors, Gran and Arisa, for their continued guidance and
love in all of my efforts!
