navigate key phases of the graduate process. Dr. Cox offered a great deal to this
study by helping me consider broader connections and comparisons. He also
provided me with a plan that helped me enjoy the writing process. And I cannot
thank Dr. Cox enough for his patience with my writing, especially with those early
drafts.
I am thankful that Dr. William Cohen from the University of Michigan
agreed to serve on my committee and generously provide his expertise in
Kenyan history and anthropology. He understood the relevance of what I was
attempting to study and the historiographical intervention. Dr. Cohen pointed out
gaps in my research and helped me connect many dots. I am also appreciative of
his early interventions that helped me avoid writing traps. It was an honor to work

Dr. Kerry Ward also graciously stepped in and provided support on the
