Each of the four settings is classified as a separate intervention. However, each
intervention contains a bundle of activities. This paper is restricted to analysing
interventions, not the individual activities contained in each intervention. Despite the
obvious benefits of a more micro-examination of the interventions, there is insufficient
evidence to permit such an analysis.

The reason for this is that most studies of nutritional interventions do not separate their
activities. Rather, the focus of the analyses is usually on the effectiveness of the
intervention as a bundle of several activities. It is therefore difficult to isolate the
effectiveness of any particular activity, as effectiveness data is only available for the
bundle of activities contained in each intervention.

To clarify the terminology of this paper:

• each intervention has a specific setting;

• each setting has a different target population; and

• each intervention contains a bundle of activities.

A summary of the setting, target population and type of activities is outlined in Table 3.
The table is followed by a more detailed discussion of each intervention.
